LANDSCAPE OIL PAINTING ~ HUDSON RIVER SCHOOL ~ CLASSICAL REALISM
Wors-In-Progress Header Graphic for Landscape Artist John O'Keefe Jr.
"I usually work on several paintings at any given time, and my process can take a week to several years for any particular work. I don't force myself to paint and must be in the mood, and I spend more time dreaming about painting than actually painting. My painting process consists of imagination, composing, imagining, and re-composing until I feel ready to paint."

HOUSE OVER THE HARBOR

"The canvas was custom sized to fit into this old frame that I am restoring. The sketch was done in pen and ink on old paper from a line-printer. It's an original composition." ~ John O'Keefe Jr.

VIEW FROM HUNTER MOUNTAIN

"My first commission is taking me a very long time to complete. This painting is a very challenging piece with many Hudson River School characteristics, and I hope it is another milestone work for me. The land scene is from a photo taken on this mountain, and the sky is from a photograph taken by my wife. She saw this cloud pattern and captured it with her digital camera, and I'm incorporating it into the painting. I am making improvements to the composition as I go. My additions are nothing drastic, but subtle changes add to the scene." ~ John O'Keefe Jr.

PASSAGE OF TIME

"I wanted some mystery in the painting, and this piece feels mysterious to me. I am only using Ivory Black and Titanium White. The ruins, the ominous sky, and the tropical foliage make this painting feel more like a Classical Realism piece than a traditional Hudson River School. I started this painting in 2008 but put it down while focusing on more traditional landscapes. This painting has a lot of detail, and I focus on every rock, cut stone, and leaf." ~ John O'Keefe Jr.
