About John O'Keefe Jr.

Hello, My name is John O'Keefe Jr. I was born and raised in Wallingford, Connecticut, USA, where I raised my family with my wife, Jennifer. While I am comfortable working in most mediums, I specialize in landscape oil painting, similar to the famous Hudson River School and Victorian-era artists. ART IN MY EARLY LIFE Like every other artist, I have loved viewing and creating art for as long as I can remember. Growing up, I always drew with pencils, colored pencils, watercolors, and just about every medium I could get my hands on. I received formal art training during my primary school years. When attending elementary school, I received specialized training at the Paier College of Art in New Haven, Connecticut. The first formal recognition of my artistic ability happened in elementary school when I won an award, placing me in the top five of a statewide student art competition. During my middle school years, I was invited to attend college-level art classes one day a week at the University of Bridgeport, Connecticut. Also, during this time, I studied watercolor painting with Connecticut artist Kathy Singer. However, my most beloved art teacher was my Aunt Ann Fucich, who instilled in me a love of art when I was a small child. John O'Keefe posing with a drawing outside of the Museum of Natural History in Manhattan, New York, when he was seven years old Outside the Museum of Natural History (NYC) at 7 Years Old. (My Aunt Ann Fucich took pictures) My love for art led me to seek a career in mechanical drafting. As new technologies emerged, I advanced to more sophisticated 3D CAD modeling systems, new product development, and, eventually, project management. Throughout the years, I completed many university courses and job-specific training to advance my mechanical design/engineering career. Even though my work was very technical, an artistic element was involved in designing new products and the associated documentation processes. My love for creating art did not stop at drawing and painting. As a teenager, I started pursuing musical skills. My first love is the guitar, and I ran a small recording studio out of my home for a time while also playing guitar in a few bands. The computer soon became another outlet for creating art. With my computer skills and 3D modeling experience, I began to develop a sophisticated DC-9-41 add-on cockpit package for Microsoft Flight Simulator. The project focused on the Scandinavian Airline Service (SAS) DC-9 airplane OY-KGR. There was extensive programming and many computer-generated renderings and image files assembled in real-time when the game was running, giving the person playing the experience of sitting in a real DC-9 cockpit. A RENEWED LOVE OF ART In 2007 my wife, Jennifer, rekindled my zeal for drawing and painting. Her encouragement and support motivated me to create O'Keefe Arts and take up oil painting as a professional artist. Jennifer also enjoys creating art, and we are working together to promote the business and my paintings because of our shared love of art. I sell original works, accept commission work to create custom landscape paintings, and offer a variety of high-quality pigment prints, i.e., Giclee, reproductions of my artwork. My paintings have been well received in the art community, allowing my works to be displayed in prestigious exhibitions and art shows. In my home state of Connecticut, the Lyme Art Gallery, Mystic Arts Center, Cate Charles Gallery, and the Mill House Gallery have exhibited my artwork. My paintings have won awards, and I have been a featured artist in a group exhibition at the Lyme Art Association's "17th Annual Associate Artists Exhibit". In April of 2009, I was elected onto the board of directors of the Cheshire Art League in Cheshire, Connecticut, and I created and managed the league's website until the fall of 2011. Organizations that I belong to are Oil Painters of America, Lyme Art Association, The Salmagundi Club of New York City, Mystic Arts Association, Cheshire Art League (until 2011), and Landscape Artists International. In 2012, Jennifer and I created Painting Frames Plus, where people can purchase high-quality reproduction painting frames. (Website: www.paintingframesplus.com)

Solo Exhibition by Mill House Gallery (2011)

The Mill House Gallery of Chester, Connecticut.
Mill House Gallery, Chester, CT

I was the featured artist in my Solo Exhibition by Mill House Gallery in Chester, Connecticut. Jane White contacted me with the invitation, which I accepted immediately. One thing I appreciate about solo exhibitions is they are a lot of work. I had to package and transport many paintings, hang and set up the entire show, create invitations, mail them out, and set the reception table. Also, several trips to the gallery were required: drop-off, opening reception, and pick-up. Despite all that was involved, the experience and enjoyment I received were worth it.

Opening Reception and Meeting the Artist – Solo Exhibition

Solo Exhibition, Exhibit opening reception refreshment table

The opening reception was on a Saturday, and a steady stream of art patrons came to see the exhibit. Unfortunately, I was not the best host because I had a hurt foot and spent most of the time sitting on a chair in the corner. I had the opportunity to speak with most people who came to see the exhibition. There were many inquiries about the artworks and the techniques that I used, and I was surprised by the number of people interested in the stories behind each work. My solo exhibition at the Mill House Gallery was a great experience.

Danielle O’Keefe’s Year of Graphite and Ink (2010)

2010 was a year of branching out into new mediums and techniques for Danielle. Graphite and Ink became a new focus. Mixing mediums, such as in her painting “Bony Fish”, that used watercolors and ink. School art classes also exposed her to important techniques such as shading and vanishing points. One of the largest pieces of the year was “Skull and the Hidden Images”, wherein she really let herself experiment with pen and ink. Overall this was Danielle O’Keefe’s year of graphite and ink.

Also during the year it became noticeable that Danielle was experimenting more with her own designs and compositions. She still used real life reference materials and practiced her lessons from school art classes, but as the year progress you could see her own flare and artistic expression coming out in her drawings and paintings.

It’s time again for the 2010 Art Show & Sale at Cheshire Nursery by Cheshire Art League. I scheduled my time better this time, and I will attend the opening reception.

Cheshire Artists – 2010 Art Show & Sale

Art show receptions are always fun. They are a time to meet with longtime friends and make new ones. On this night, I met a very successful Connecticut artist, Tony Falcone. Tony, his wife Judith Andrews, and I talked for a while, and I look forward to meeting them again at future Cheshire Art League events. I also had the chance to hang out and chat with some other artist friends, Carla Koch, John Mackay, and Martin Gent, all fellow Cheshire Art League members.

Concluding Thoughts

Another great local set of shows. The 2010 Art Show & Sale at Cheshire Nursery by Cheshire Art League was a success. I got to meet Tony Falcone and his wife, and we shared a story about the time we crashed into each other in our cars but didn’t know each other at the time. It was during the ordinary course of conversation that we made the connection about that accident. We all laughed about it. Overall I had a good time.

Setting up for the Slide Show (05-11-2010)

I was approached by the Cheshire Art League late in 2009 and asked if I would give an MS Powerpoint Landscape Oil Painting Presentation on my painting process and techniques. I accepted the invitation and began working right away. The final PowerPoint presentation contained over 140 detailed and automated slides documenting the significant elements of my painting process from conception to the end sale.

Concluding Thoughts

I put a lot of time into this MS Powerpoint Landscape Oil Painting Presentation. It made me think chronologically about exactly how I paint, from conception to painting to exhibiting and selling. The presentation was given on 5/11/2010 for the Chesire Art League members. You can view the presentation event post here.

Preparing the Presentation

Preparing for the presentation was very enlightening to me. The time I spent reviewing and meditating on my methods and techniques helped me to grow in appreciation for how I work. The presentation also helped me progress toward another goal: recording and producing my series of landscape oil painting “how to” videos and DVDs.

Once I had the draft presentation put together, I invited some respected friends (and fellow art enthusiasts) over for dinner, and I used them as my test audience. They enjoyed the presentation, saying it was very professionally done, and I incorporated some of their suggestions into the final document.

Presentation Day (5/11/2010)

The slide show presentation took about 1-1/2 hours to give, which included an open discussion, questions, and answers. Also, I brought several completed and in-progress paintings. This allowed patrons to examine examples of my work firsthand. After concluding the slide show presentation, I discussed and answered many more questions about my artwork and techniques.
